Leap Year

Well, last night was kind of a rough night because my son for whatever reason was unable to sleep. After him getting up and crying several times between 2 and 3 in the morning, I gave up and we went downstairs to watch TV. Normally I would have been a stickler and made him go sleep in his own bed, but both Thom and Riley had work and school today. I figured my son ...

Somber Note

So I guess yesterday, in Ohio, Chardon High School had a shooting. Police aren't naming any names, but according to the yahoo article I read they got the shooter kid's name from one of the witnesses. We've heard about shootings before here in America. And everyone always says, "It's too close to home." Some people scream its because we've taken God out of our schools. I've heard others say at what point do we ...

9-6=3

Well, February is winding down and so is "blog every day in February." I love doing these blog every day things, but they do take a lot out of you.

Today I worked on unpacking some more boxes. I had 9, and it now appears to be down to 3. So, I'm pretty excited about that. I feel like I accomplished something today at least. I have also been working on my ...

Rice Christians and Anne Rice quits

Alright, so originally, I told you that I would be taking the weekend off from blogging. I lied. I also had said I would blog every day in February and that was a lie too. So I figure maybe this will make up for it a little bit. Meh. Maybe not. Anyhow, I've been thinking about rice. I know that's a strange thing to consider, but I happen to be a strange person, ...

Yesterday and Today

For some reason, this week has been really difficult for blogging. But here I am!

February 23, 2012

I pretty much had three goals for today.

1. Drawing in my sketchbook. 2. Finding and buying shelves for my kids' room. 3. Building said shelves that I bought from Target.  And I actually achieved those! Yay me!

February 24, 2012

I have been working like crazy getting clean laundry upstairs to be ...

Saying Thank You

I went onto the Allyson Artwork facebook page today to post links to this week's blogs, and I happened to notice that the page has reached 100 likes.

it's nice to know that there are people out there who appreciate what you do and I just wanted to take a moment to say thank you.

Today's blog post is a little sparce mostly because I'm still doing a lot of reflection at ...

Jean-Leon Gerome

Today's post is about the French artist and sculptor Jean-Leon Gerome. I was first attracted to this artist when I was in the process of learning about Orientalism.

I can hear you asking, "What's Orientalism?" Well, I'm glad you asked. It pretty much means anytime a western writer, artist, or designer based what they were doing on anything from the Middle East or East Africa or eastern cultures in general.

So, ...

Aubrey Beardsley

I don't know that I'm comfortable saying this artist is a favorite. However, Aubrey Beardsley was an English illustrator and author from the late 1800s. I think honestly me choosing him had more to do with him seeming to be synonymous with the Decadent Art Movement. Although, I've seen he was more a part of the Aestheticism Movement. But whatever.

I can't tell you exactly when I learned about the Decadence movement, only ...

Liu Xia

Producing art at great personal cost in order to send a message that is important and must be heard: Urgent expression.

Liu Xia is a Chinese woman who is married to the 2010 Nobel Prize winner Liu Xiaobo. Previously she always said that she was not involved in politics like her husband. And yet, her work, now, seems as though it couldn't be more steeped in it. Her husband has been imprisoned with ...

Hey Everyone!

I decided I'm going to take a break on Sundays. But it's Monday and I'm back to blogging. This week I'm going to dedicate to looking at artists and their work.

The first one for this week is Japanese artist Riusuke Fukahori who paints 3 dimensional representations of goldfish using paint and layers of resin in wooden containers. His artwork is amazing and mind boggling when you watch videos about ...

Feb 4 2012

Another Texas adventure. We took the kids to the Victoria Community Center. The kids got to ride horses and see exotic birds, play soccer ball and what not. They had a lot of fun but Lenny was pretty exhausted afterwards. We went home and laid him down. Unfortunately he slept for quite awhile and woke up almost at 9. Lol.

But that's alright. I'll be putting him to bed shortly. I hope you ...

Feb 3 2012

So, we've been having issues with our dish tv ever since we moved in pretty much. It keeps going out around 1:30 (which I find highly suspicious) and then somewhere between 4 and 8 pm. We've called the tech line and all that, but the guy who does our area apparently has been extremely busy on calls (also suspicious!) so we still haven't managed to see him yet.

I also find this odd ...

Feb 2 2012

Good Morning!

The beginning of a new month in a new place and a new state. Although, I do have to say, it's a little disconcerting that everyone keeps telling me its always sunny and blue skied in Texas, but I get here and it's now been cloudy and rained more days than it hasn't. Ha ha. My husband has informed me that it's my fault. I brought the Ohio weather with me. ...

Congrats to my husband for landing his new job with the Victoria Advocate. :) The other thing that is exciting is I'm planning on spending A LOT more time on art now. Yay! I'm ...
