Well, I finally finished Child 44 by Tom Rob Smith....
Overall how do I feel about the book? It was not a complete waste of my time. It did intrigue my interest. But I'm not sure I would reccommend it to someone else to read unless they really liked murder mysteries or were obsessed with Russian history maybe?
The beginning of this book was incredibly confusing for me. The author threw a bunch of stories about kids at you, and other people and I had a hard time figuring out who the heck he was talking about from character to character. So many names, and the fact that they were Russian did not help. Something simple like Leo or Andre, okay. But when it has more syllables than three I'm at a loss to remember it much less what details were associated with the person.
During the first 2/3rds of the book I couldn't figure out what the heck Child 44 had anything to do with the plot considering we kept following this stupid officer around named Leo.
But if you are really willing to give this book a try I will say that the last third of the book really picked up, things got exciting, and began to make a lot more sense. In some aspects it became too predictable, in other aspects not so much. I think the biggest issue with this book is you kept trying to find someone, anyone to have a connection to, but terrible things kept happening and they kept dying before you could.
Note: This book is not for the feint of heart, ultimately its about a serial killer who targets small children, and cuts out their stomachs, fills their mouths with bark postmortem, and leaves them for dead and naked in the snow. Thankfully, you don't get to read in great detail of what the killer does.
The book was pretty depressing. You kept waiting for something good to happen to somebody. For someone to actually survive. But I can honestly say if you stick it out through the end its not disappointing. I wound up finishing the book for no other reason then the sheer perplexity I had at trying to figure out how on earth were all these people I was reading about connected?
Alright, that's all I got for this one. I feel kind of netral on it. Not my favorite book, but I don't hate it either.
I am planning on doing another review. I just haven't picked a book yet. I was thinking of doing Lost on Planet China but the problem with this is that the book is not fiction. It's about a Dutch guy that decides to travel to China to learn more about it. And it's true. I'm not sure for how much of a review that would be. So I might pick another title.
Also, August begins tomorrow! And my daily blogging shall begin! I'm very excited about this. One of the things that I'm considering is posting artwork everyday. But I'm not so sure about that one. Blogging takes a bit of time as it is, and trying to add a drawing element to that as well could be a bit tricky. But we shall see what I come up with.
Also this is the last weekend for Oliver! at Kent Trumbull Theatre. If you have the opportunity you should go see it! I unfortunately don't think I'm going to get the chance. I've tried two weekends in a row unsuccessfully. :( No babysitter! Oh well.
Hope you are having a fabulous weekend.
